Join "Booth | Collective Call " as a Director

We invite four directors to contribute to "Booth | Collective Call," an anthology project based on the key pillars of filmmaking: collaboration and unique points of view.

New York City's streets are full of unexpected treasures. One day, we stumbled upon a London-style phone booth that sparked our imagination. This sight reminded us of the kaze no denwa (風の電話, "Wind Phone") in Ōtsuchi, Japan - a monument where people symbolically speak to their departed loved ones.

Inspired by this connection, we initially set out to create a short film. Our concept revolved around a mystical phone booth that allowed brief, 15-second conversations with anyone, living or dead. We completed the filming, but as we reviewed the footage, we realized there was potential for something more experimental and unique.

Rather than sticking to a single narrative, we decided to expand our project into an anthology film. We're now inviting multiple creatives to interpret our footage through their own artistic lenses. This approach will allow for a diverse range of perspectives and storytelling styles, all centered around our mystical phone booth concept.

Taking cues from projects like "Collective: Unconscious" by Jeanelle Marie & Oliver Shuster, we're calling on visionary filmmakers to transform our raw material. Each director will craft their own narrative, infusing the footage with fresh perspectives and innovative storytelling techniques.

This is your chance to create your own story and vision. You're free to direct, re-edit, or completely reimagine the footage into your own narrative. We encourage you to push boundaries and bring your distinct artistic imprint to the project. Your vision could incorporate elements of magical realism, psychological horror, poetic documentary, or any other approach that speaks to you.

The only constraints are the guidelines outlined below.

Your Role

Bring your creativity to the forefront! Starting from the original footage, craft your own narrative and write your 6-minute story.

Rules & Guidelines

To ensure consistency and integrity throughout the anthology, the following rules apply:

  • Duration: Your film must not exceed 6 minutes.

  • Protagonist Consistency: The protagonist in the pre-shot footage cannot be changed, although you can add as many characters as you want.

  • Phone booth: The phone booth needs to be present in the film.

  • New Footage: You can add new footage, including archival material, but the total film length must stay within the 6-minute limit.

  • Format: To ensure visual consistency, we prefer that any new footage is filmed in 35mm, 16mm, 8mm, or VHS. This will be considered a plus in the selection process, but it’s not mandatory.

  • Dialogue: Minimum standards for voiceover and dubbing will be discussed with the production team to ensure consistency and quality.

  • No Explicit Content: Avoid using explicit content unless it is crucial to the narrative and approved by the production team.

  • Credit Guidelines: All external contributors (e.g., additional actors, composers) must be properly credited in accordance with Herbie Studio guidelines.

These rules and resources are designed to facilitate a smooth creative process and ensure that all contributions align well with the overarching theme and quality standards of the project.
