fotografia | Music Video

Fotografia is a concept album created by musician Carlo Purpura, inspired by the sounds of the Aeolian Islands. The video for the album's lead track, also titled 'Fotografia,' visually embodies the theme of 'mono no aware'—the Japanese idiom that expresses the pathos of impermanence. This poignant awareness of life’s fleeting nature is uniquely explored through the bustling backdrop of modern metropolises. The project captures the transient, gentle sadness of ephemeral moments, revealing a deeper, reflective melancholy that resonates universally, even amidst urban chaos.

The video was shot using an Aaton XTR Super 16mm camera, employing in-camera editing to align the visuals closely with the music. The music was imprinted onto the film during shooting to emulate the essence of photography as the “here and now" moment. This approach allowed for precise synchronization with the rhythm and preserved the craftsmanship to honor the filmmaking process.
